Our 17 billion years old universe is a huge “organ” invented by Jehova.
Due to the force of gravity galaxies, stars, planets, comets
and others constellations form gigantic organ pipes.
That is the Credo of My life and work.
To learn the harmony of the musical instrument of the universe
and to make it heard to the people is My mission.
Thus, I do not consider myself a composer but a Recorder of Music.
(Urmas Sisask)
The basic idea of the works by Urmas Sisask is closely connected with the theme of the starry sky. A serious interest in astronomy and the attempts to connect that with music can be observed already in the early works by Urmas Sisask: in 1987 he began with his “Starry Sky Cycle” for piano which forms a peculiar open composition where new pieces can constantly be added; in 1989 “The Pleiades” for piano was created; in 1990 “The Milky Way” for two pianos was composed, and in 1991 “The Andromeda” for eight hands. By today “half of the starry sky has been charted”.
The support pillar in his work is the Keyboard of the Universe which contains all the celestial revolutions and rotations. The Starry Sky works by Urmas Sisask are dominated by two methods of composition. The intuitive cognitive method is based upon the impressions and experience from the astronomic observations and knowledge achieved through the latter (the music on the present CD falls under this category). The composer invented his other method in 1988. The so-called basic concept of the universal musical harmony requires the transformation of all the cosmic objects’ rotation frequencies into musical pitch. All the celestial bodies revolve, rotate and oscillate each on their own frequencies. Under certain conditions it is possible to make these vibrations heardable as musical octaves.
Shamanism has had a strong influence on Sisask’s music. The composer finds that rituals is one of the important forces in the continuity of life. Through shamanistic tradition, perceiving himself as a particle in the universal harmony, Sisask has come to the core of the systematic order of the universe. One thing is certain – Urmas Sisask intuitively senses these connections between celestial bodies, sounds and people that used to be self-evident for ancient people but have become unique and peculiar to us.
